Soaps.com recently spoke with Kelly Sullivan, who took over the role of Kate Howard in September 2011. Read on for her thoughts about playing Kate’s alter Connie, Kate’s future with Sonny (Maurice Benard) and what’s next for the emotionally conflicted fashionista.
First of all, with Kate stuck in a mental hospital and her only visible employee Maxie’s (Jen Lilley) recent stint in jail, Soaps.com wondered just who has been running Ms. Howard’s fashion magazine Crimson.
“We know it’s not Sonny,” Sullivan laughed. “That’s a good question. I do not know and I’ve been wondering that myself and wondering why there wasn’t something at least said about it. Maybe she has some international contacts or maybe she has some people that work from home. That’s my prayer.”
Sullivan was recast in the role originated by Megan Ward (“[She] did an amazing job.”) from 2007 – 2010. While Sullivan watched clips of Ward playing the character for background and history purposes, she wasn’t daunted by taking over for another actress.
“For me, I just looked at it as an opportunity to bring my own self into a role and knew it would be different,” she explained. “That’s all you can really do. It’s your version of a character. I took it as a really great challenge. I also became aware early on of the soap fans [laughs]. I don’t think I was really privy to that before. It’s all been a great learning experience. It’s a really fun character.”
When Kate reemerged last fall after a lengthy absence, she had an air of mystery surrounding her. That turned out to be her split personality Connie, but was that always the plan, considering there was a regime change midway through the reveal? read more
No. 10: Kate Howard/Connie Falconeri, General Hospital
Icy, fashion bible helmer Kate Howard (Megan Ward) wasn’t in town long before everyone figured out she was really round the way girl Connie Falconeri from Bensonhurst on General Hospital. Connie had changed her name and history decades earlier to forget about the old neighborhood and her childhood sweetheart Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). The re-christened Kate did a great job keeping the past in the past, until she became involved with Sonny again as an adult. Unfortunately for Port Charles’ answer to Anna Wintour, no one informed her that dating the dimpled don meant you might need to invest more in bullet proof vests than the latest couture!
After being shot on her wedding day—and later finding out that Sonny had slept with his four-time ex-wife Carly (Laura Wright)—Kate ended things with the corrupt coffee importer. Flash forward to 2011, when Kate returned to Port Charles just in time to help a post-Brenda (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo) Sonny pick up the pieces.
This time something was different about Kate (Kelly Sullivan). No, I’m not talking about the newly recast face, or the questionable style choices for a supposed fashionista. Something else about Kate was a little…off. When Kate was found standing in her bloody wedding gown, looking as nutty as a box of Cracker Jacks, fans knew something was terribly wrong with the Crimson queen…… read more
What on earth happened to Connie Falconeri from Bensonhurst? When we first met Connie, she had revamped her life and started anew under the name Kate Howard, a world-renowned fashionista! She also happened to be the first love and girlfriend of a young Sonny Corinthos. Later, the two would reconnect when Kate moved her business and herself to Port Charles. They would strike up a romance, and several gunshots and a bloody wedding dress later, eventually break-up. Flash forward: after Sonny’s recent dissolution of his marriage to Brenda, Sonny and Kate rekindled their relationship. Only this time something is off, way off! Viewers have come to find out that Kate has a split personality! And that other half of her split personality now has a name … “Connie”!
When General Hospital recast the role of Kate Howard, they did so by showing popular fan favorite Megan Ward the front door, and brought in the also talented and beautiful, Kelly Sullivan. Within a matter of months, Kelly has put her own stamp on the role … and what a role it has become! It’s a delicious roller coaster ride for her, the characters of Port Charles, and the viewers, as they watch Kelly navigate through each distinct personality. And on this week’s episode, the lives of Kate/Connie, Sonny, Johnny, and Carly really hit the fan. Through Connie’s deception and manipulations she gets Johnny in the sack, and both Sonny and Carly walked in on it! Perfect for Connie, and not so perfect for Kate. And then the fireworks really begin!
On-Air On-Soaps had the chance to speak with Kelly to get her take on playing the complex Kate/Connie, and to get some insight and a preview of what is to come and where it all might lead. Needless to say, there are some shocking revelations ahead! Along with GH head writer Ron Carlivati, who is no stranger to writing DID storylines during his time with One Life to Live, Kelly hopes that this tale of a serious illness will be just as compelling, but in a unique way. During our chat, Kelly also addressed rumors that have recently been fueled on Twitter, and some other hot button issues. Here’s Kelly! Read More……
