You Can’t Recycle Vulnerability
“An audience can tell when they’re in the presence of a truth that was discovered just for them, and they can tell when it’s a truth that’s being recycled. We want to watch behind your eyes - you taking in that information - and it shifting you.”
- George C. Wolfe
If you’re acting vulnerability, it’s not vulnerability.
If you’re acting the scene, there's no space for discovery.
If there’s no discovery, you’re blocking vulnerability.
Stop trying to act the scene - that’s not your job.
You don’t have to show them you understand the scene.
Let the writer, director, and editor worry about the scene.
You are not the story.
You are what you do, because of the story.
Your job is to respond truthfully, moment-to-moment, from within the character.
The scene will take care of itself.
One of the best actors I’ve ever worked with once said:
“When I’m acting, I never know where I’m going - and I don’t care.”
“We want to watch a human discover in real time, how horrible, painful, and glorious it is to be human.”
- George C. Wolfe
Don’t decide beforehand. Discover in the moment.
No plan, no pre-made choices.
Just spontaneity. Freedom. Vulnerability.
That’s where you break through.
The camera wants to see the behavior of the character, not the story.
Just listen and respond. Listen and respond.
Refuse to be untruthful.
Risk being understood.
